The wholesale fibre providers in New Zealand are Chorus, Enable, Northpower Fibre, and Tuatahi First Fibre. These companies built the country's fibre broadband networks in partnership with the government's Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) program. These wholesalers set a price for the broadband connection that you, the Kiwi consumer, uses at home. This wholesale price is then sold on to consumers by retail service providers like Spark, One NZ, 2degrees and many others.
Last year, it was announced that in 2025, some of the wholesalers were to increase their prices to these retail service providers. This price increase comes in lieu of continued high prices in the industry, contributing to higher costs of materials and maintenance of the technology within the fibre network that keeps so many Kiwis connected... and if wholesale costs increase then someone needs to pay... this will, unfortunately, mostly be us, the Kiwi consumer.
As a result of these wholesale price increase, some broadband retailers in New Zealand will be raising their monthly broadband connection rates, if they have not done so already... so CHECK YOUR PROVIDER! If your price is about to increase you CAN do something about it!
