Statistics NZ has provided statistics that show while the costs in most sectors in Aotearoa continue to increase, telecommunication equipment and service prices have consistently decreased year after year!

The statistics paint a surprising picture! 

The Statistics NZ Consumer Price Index for December 2021, revealed that compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the cost of living has mostly increased. Transport costs by 3.9%, housing by 2.0%, recreation and cultural costs by 2.1% and various other goods and services by 1.7%. 

However, telecommunications costs saw a DECREASE! Telecommunication services reduced by 1.5% and telecommunication equipment costs reduced by 8.3%!

So while life in general becomes more expensive for everyone, telecommunications continues to become more and more affordable for all Kiwis. That’s choice as! 

Demand is dropping prices! 

But you may be thinking, if everything else is going up in price, why is telecommunications dropping?!

One word: Demand. 

“The ongoing pandemic and the situation in Ukraine have conspired to force prices up [for most everyday items], while at the same time the demand for telecommunications continues to rocket,” says Paul Brislen, CEO of Telecommunications Forum NZ. 

These last few years have hit our pockets hard for most things thanks to the pandemic and now because of what’s happening in Ukraine. But we’ve also started to use our phones and broadband more than ever before! We’re constantly working and staying connected on the internet and chewing through heaps of data on our broadband and mobile plans. 

This increase in demand for mobile and broadband data is reflected in the statistics. Fixed broadband usage increased by a massive 37% from last year and mobile broadband usage increased by 22%! 

That’s a crazy increase in demand from Kiwis across the motu! This demand means more competition. Competition means providers have to drop prices and create awesome deals to keep or gain customers. This is great for consumers! 

For mobile in particular, there’s never been more choice from prepaid plans for budget customers to family plans and even larger business plans. 

“The competitive landscape has delivered a huge range in terms of choice and pricing and as a result we regularly beat the OECD averages for mobile services,” says Brislen. 

“The industry has invested $15.7 billion over the past decade to increase the reach and capacity of our networks and during lockdown this has proved invaluable, helping to keep the economy pumping at a time when many countries fell into recession.”

So the result has led to more demand which means a decrease in cost for all things telecommunications- your mobile and broadband plans included!

It’s really fantastic because at the end of the day it’s helping Kiwis out. 

“The price customers pay for telecommunications is constantly falling and helping to offset the rises in groceries, fuel, rent and almost every other sector Statistics New Zealand monitors.”
