Rural Wireless Broadband NZ

If you live outside of big cities deep in a rural area you might already know, that your broadband options are limited. The Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) was designed by government, Chorus and Vodafone to be a solution for this issue.

The idea was to connect as many rural houses and business to faster broadband especially to those who can’t get fibre. The bar was set up on at least 5Mbps to more than 90% of New Zealand rural homes and businesses.

The idea was to connect as many rural houses and business to faster broadband especially to those who can’t get fibre. The bar was set up on at least 5Mbps to more than 90% of New Zealand rural homes and businesses.

Three main rural wireless broadband options are:

4G/3G broadband

You can get a 3G/4G connection to your home via an antenna on your roof. Potential speed for 4G network is 100Mbps but you have to have ideal signal conditions. If your house is out of range of the 4G coverage, you can connect to the 3G RBI network, but it is obviously slower with an average speed around 20Mbps. But again, we should keep in mind that this depends on signal conditions. Some providers can send their wireless signal straight to the modem, meaning there is no need for an antenna to be installed on your roof.

Satellite broadband

Satellite service is for those who are too remote for all the other options. Satellite broadband is not a part of the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI). In addition, satellite broadband offers the lowest data caps and slowest speed plus usually is the most expansive option and is seen as a last-resort technology.
Satellite broadband installation is similar to the wireless one – you will need a specialist to come and set up your satellite dish.

Local wireless broadband

Some smaller providers operate their own rural wireless broadband NZ networks in different areas. You can check out what is available at your property by entering your address to our address checker. Usually, they have competitive pricing and plan options for this service. In addition, the installation process is much simpler than with satellite broadband and not that expensive.
